Overview
Think you have a quick enough wit to give clues on the spot? Get your team to guess the phrase before the timer runs out — then pass it on. If the buzzer rings while you’re holding it, the other team scores.

First Impressions
I thought this looked kind of fun from the TV commercials but maybe a bit childish. It was brought out with our regular board game group and immediately proved me wrong. The excitement and fun level were much higher than I anticipated. We played several games that night and many more since.
Thoughts
At its core, Catch Phrase is a glorified Hot Potato that makes you use your brain. That might not sound impressive on paper, but it works extremely well in practice.
Setup is instant. Pull it out, explain the rules in under a minute, and you’re playing. For a party game this matters — you don’t want to lose the energy of a group before it even starts.
The time pressure is what makes it. Something about the countdown makes people frantic and excitable in a way that’s genuinely fun to watch. We’ve had games where people are yelling, things get knocked over, beverages go flying. Classic party game moments.
The random timer is perfect. Some rounds might be 15 seconds, some 30 — you never know when it’ll buzz. The beeping starts slow and gets faster as you approach the end, but never tells you exactly when it’ll ring. Watching someone panic as the beeps speed up is consistently hilarious.
Electronic vs non-electronic: Both versions are great. If you’re taking it places, go electronic — no loose cards or scoreboard to manage. For home play, the non-electronic version is cheaper and you could always make new cards when the originals get stale.
The one real flaw: with heavy play, you start recognizing answers. We played frequently for a couple months and started getting repeats. The fix is simple — put it away for a while and come back to it fresh.
Conclusion
Catch Phrase is a solid party game that works with any group. The concept is simple, the energy is high, and it consistently gets people laughing. Not a strategy game, not a deep experience — but a reliable, fun addition to any game night. We’ve played it with many different groups and people always want to play again.
